Verizon’s the biggest carrier in the U.S. and their size is allowing them to churn out 4G faster than any of the other carriers. Verizon has promised to get LTE to over 140 markets by the end of the year, and so far has activated its super speedy 4G in 74 cities

The interestingly-shaped Nokia X7 may not be headed to AT&T anymore , but that doesn’t mean it won’t be available in North America at all. In fact, it’s already on sale SIM-free and unlocked in the US , and courtesy of MobileSyrup we’re hearing that it’s even going to be picked up by a carrier.

Although neither HTC nor AT&T has confirmed the future release of the Facebook-centric ChaCha in the US, the smartphone seems to be really close to hitting the shelves via the second largest North American carrier. Earlier this month, an HTC ChaCha with AT&T-friendly 3G bands was approved by the FCC , and now we get to see an AT&T-branded version of the handset.

One of the things that is so great about Android and its open source nature is that the OS can be used to power cheap smartphones for people on a strict budget and countries where people generally aren’t able to afford the high-end and expensive handsets that many of us take for granted in the US and Europe. One of the more costly components inside a smartphone is the processor and so far, ARM platforms rule the Android world.

Huawei has a new Android smartphone that’s been approved by the FCC earlier today. The smartphone is referred to as Huawei X1, Huawei U8180, and Huawei Gaga (Huawei has even trademarked this name in the US, so it will probably use it there – unless Lady Gaga has something to say about that). For now, the FCC approved the X1 to work only on the 850 / 1900 GSM, and 850 WCDMA bands, thus US availability is still uncertain.

Politico’s Eliza Krigman reports that several non-profit groups that receive money from AT&T have recently voiced support for the telecom giant’s impeding merger with T-Mobile USA. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) and the National Education Association (NEA) have all spoken in favor of the deal in recent weeks. Each receives substantial donations from AT&T.

For a month now we’ve known that the LG Optimus Black was headed to North America , and even if we didn’t know back than exactly which carriers will sell the phone in which countries, it was kind of obvious that the handset would become available both in the US and in Canada. Well, it may just hit the streets in Canada first
